ATS Keywords for
Financial Analysts

Financial analyst postings screen for two things at once: the modelling craft, and the business partnering that turns a model into a decision. Candidates usually cover the first and under-describe the second, even though requisitions spell it out — "partner with business leaders", "support the annual planning cycle". There is also a systems dimension, since the analyst who can pull their own data from the ERP or a BI tool is a materially different hire. All three strands are below.

14 ATS keywords for Financial Analyst CVs

What each term signals to the system reading your CV.

  • Financial modeling

The defining technical skill of the role and its most consistently screened term.

  • FP&A

The function acronym used in requisition titles and searched literally.

  • Forecasting

Names the forward-looking half of the job, distinct from historical reporting.

  • Budgeting / annual planning

The planning cycle is a core responsibility and standard requisition phrasing.

  • Variance analysis

The explain-the-gap work analysts are actually measured on month to month.

  • Excel (advanced, VBA)

Depth level is specified in postings, and the tooling detail is matched.

  • Valuation (DCF, comps)

Method names signal corporate development or investment-facing experience.

  • Three-statement modeling

Specific craft vocabulary that separates modellers from spreadsheet users.

  • KPI reporting / dashboards

The recurring deliverable that business partners consume.

  • SQL / Power BI / Tableau

Self-service data access is increasingly required rather than preferred.

  • ERP (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite)

Where the source data lives, and named explicitly in most postings.

  • Business partnering

The influence half of the role, frequently in the posting and rarely on the CV.

  • Scenario analysis / sensitivity

Decision-support vocabulary used in senior analyst requisitions.

  • CFA

A credential that functions as a literal filter for investment-adjacent roles.

How to use this list

  • Describe models by what they decided: an investment approved, a cost line cut, a forecast accuracy improvement.
  • Name your data sources and tools — an analyst who queries the warehouse directly is a distinct, screened profile.
  • Include the scale you supported: revenue of the business unit, budget size, number of cost centres.
  • Add the business-partnering vocabulary explicitly; a purely technical CV reads as a reporting role, not an analyst one.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you upload.

Is a CFA worth listing if I am not in investment management?

List it — it is a recognised credential and a literal match where postings mention it. For corporate FP&A it is a bonus rather than a filter, so it belongs in a certifications block rather than at the top of the CV.

How technical should a financial analyst CV be?

Technical enough to clear the tooling filters — Excel depth, and SQL or a BI tool where the posting names one — without losing the commercial framing. Requisitions increasingly screen for both, and a CV that only does one half underperforms.

How do I show modelling ability without sharing the models?

Describe the model's scope and consequence: number of entities or scenarios, planning horizon, and the decision it supported. That is specific enough to be credible and carries the method keywords naturally.
