The trap is that engineers tend to write about outcomes ("improved checkout reliability") and omit the stack that produced them.     Name the language explicitly rather than implying it — no ATS infers "Python" from "Django".

    Signals you have worked in a distributed codebase rather than a single monolith.

  • CI/CD

    Requisitions use the abbreviation, so spell out the tool too (GitHub Actions, Jenkins) to match both searches.

  • Unit testing

    Test discipline is a filter on mid-level and senior roles; naming a framework (pytest, Jest) doubles the match.

  • Git / version control

    Still an explicit line item on many requisitions, especially outside pure-tech companies.

  • AWS / GCP / Azure

    Cloud provider names are high-signal and provider-specific — listing the wrong one will not match.

  • Docker / Kubernetes

    Containerisation appears on most modern backend postings, often as a hard requirement.

  • SQL

    Two letters that appear in a majority of engineering requisitions and are trivially easy to leave off.

    Evidence of collaborative practice, and a common bullet in senior engineering requisitions.

  • Scalability / performance optimization

    Pairs a measurable achievement with the vocabulary the requisition uses for it.

  • Put the languages and cloud providers in a dedicated Skills section — ATS parsers read it more reliably than prose buried in a bullet.
  • Mirror the exact spelling from the job description: "Node.js" and "NodeJS" are different strings to a keyword matcher.
  • Attach a number to the achievement, not the keyword: "cut p95 latency 40% by redesigning the REST API" matches and persuades.
  • Drop the languages you would not want to be interviewed on — a keyword you cannot defend costs you at the technical screen.

Should I list every programming language I have touched?

No. List what you can discuss under pressure. ATS keyword matching gets you past the filter, but a recruiter screen or technical interview immediately follows — a padded skills list turns into a bad conversation. Prioritise the languages named in the job description that you genuinely use.

Do GitHub links help with ATS?

The link itself does nothing for keyword matching — an ATS does not crawl it. It helps with the human reviewer after the filter, so include it, but never rely on your repos to carry skills you left off the CV text.

How many of these keywords should appear on my CV?

Aim for the ones that appear in the specific job description you are applying to, typically 8-12 of this list. Stuffing all fourteen into a CV that does not support them reads as noise to the recruiter who opens it next.
