ATS Keywords for
HR Managers
HR professionals often write the vaguest CVs of anyone, which is striking given how many of them own the applicant tracking system. The cause is that HR work is broad and gets summarised — "managed all HR functions" — instead of named. Requisitions do the opposite: they list employee relations, performance management, HRIS platforms, and the specific employment law regime. Those named functions are what the screen matches. The list below breaks HR management back into its screened parts.
14 ATS keywords for HR Manager CVs
What each term signals to the system reading your CV.
Employee relations
The most consistently screened HR term and the core of the manager-level job.
HRIS (Workday, BambooHR, SAP SuccessFactors)
Platform names are matched individually and are frequently a hard requirement.
Performance management
Names the review-cycle ownership that defines the role at manager level.
Talent acquisition / recruitment
Hiring responsibility is screened separately from generalist HR work.
Onboarding / offboarding
Lifecycle processes listed explicitly under responsibilities in most postings.
Employment law / compliance
Jurisdiction-specific and often a stated requirement rather than a preference.
Compensation and benefits
A distinct specialisation that generalist HR vocabulary does not cover.
Employee engagement
Culture and retention work named directly in people-team requisitions.
Conflict resolution / investigations
The hard end of employee relations, and a real differentiator when evidenced.
Policy development
Signals you write the framework rather than only administering it.
Learning and development
Frequently bundled into HR manager roles and searched as its own term.
HR analytics / people metrics
A growing requirement and still scarce on HR CVs, so it differentiates.
Payroll administration
Operational ownership that smaller-company postings almost always include.
Diversity and inclusion
A named programme responsibility in a large share of current requisitions.
How to use this list
- Replace "managed all HR functions" with the named functions — each one is a separate string the filter checks.
- State headcount supported and the jurisdictions you covered; scope and legal context are what size the role.
- Name the HRIS you administered, since migration experience and platform familiarity are frequent filters.
- Add people metrics where you have them: time to hire, turnover reduced, engagement score movement.
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you upload.
HR generalist or HR manager — which title should I use?
Use the title you held, but make sure your summary line reflects the level the posting is hiring for. Titles are searched literally, so a generalist applying for a manager role should make the ownership scope explicit in the text.
How important is HRIS experience?
Very, and specifically so. Postings name Workday, BambooHR or SuccessFactors because the system is already chosen and the learning curve is real. List every platform you have administered rather than the generic term.
Should I mention employment law knowledge?
Yes, with the jurisdiction. Compliance knowledge is regional, and "familiar with Spanish labour law" or "FMLA and ADA compliance" matches where a bare "compliance" does not.
